Healing foods to eat postpartum

We prepare and think about birth a lot. Or at least I did.

But postpartum? Not so much.

It wasn’t until after I had both my children that I even heard of a postpartum doula. A birth doula sure, but postpartum – no.

Postpartum was a shocking reality slap. It was beautiful. It was messy. And it was the first time in my life that I craved more support on such a deep level.

Imagine how different our world would be if new mothers had extra support and delicious nourishing meals during those first few days, weeks and months after birth?

I know that my own matrescence journey would have been a little gentler with a little less nutrient depletion. How about yours?

Postpartum care and nourishment are so important. So, I asked Alicia Allison, a postpartum chef, postpartum doula and herbalist, to join me on the podcast to talk about how mothers can get more nourishment postpartum.

Alicia and I chat about:

  • Bringing celebration to postpartum food
  • How to build new postpartum traditions
  • Why a culture of care is what mothers need
  • Foods to eat when pregnant
  • Healing foods postpartum
  • Why preconception is a great time to work on holistic health
  • The importance of agency in creating our postpartum experience
  • Herbs to support mothers postpartum

Not only is Alicia a postpartum chef, postpartum doula, and herbalist, but she is also a yoga teacher, lactation counsellor, somatic wellness practitioner. She is a pioneer and leader in postpartum nutrition. Over more than a decade of working as a postpartum chef and doula, Alicia has supported over 80 families during the fourth trimester. She created NOURISH, a program that educates and mentors home chefs and postpartum doulas to provide care to more families during those postpartum weeks and months. Alicia is dedicated to helping others heal, nurture their bodies and bring life into this world in a way that elevates our collective consciousness.
